Our
everyday physical environment may be regarded as simply the backdrop around
which we map our lives.
The human hustle and edifice of urban streets are a labyrinth to be
hurried through; a ripening field of rape a familiar glimpse of colour to be
driven past at speed.
Anna Simmons has a particular gift for compelling the viewer to look
again.
Her paintings reveal an acute awareness of fleeting moments of
transcendent beauty. Within the imposing scale of street, cathedral or station, unnamed and isolated figures are caught in momentary transition, softening the strict linear formality of the background architecture. It is this contrast of figures and structural vastness, and in particular the ethereal light she captures flawlessly, that give these paintings their unique grandeur. In recent years a move away from London has led to new inspiration. Her instinctive grasp of the beauty and subtlety in variations of transient light, are perfectly suited to the exploration of the sweeping Downs surrounding her new home in Marlborough. Trained at St. Martin’s, Anna has had solo exhibitions in London and America, and her work has been sold in Italy, Switzerland and Germany.
