Andrea works with bone china clay combined with paper to create vessels which are each unique yet compliment each other as a series of works. Using a slip-casting technique the paper behaves as a strengthener, enabling Andrea to produce an extremely fine shell of clay. Through controlled firing the clay begins to vitrify and the forms become fluid as they start to slump and distort whilst in the kiln.
Some forms are vessels containing glass which is cast directly inside the piece. Emulating liquid contained within the form, the glass level is visible through the china from outside the vessel. Using a palette of subtle hues the glass resembles water which has a stillness and calm. The forms have a quiet, contemplative quality, particularly when viewed as groups or installations.
Fascinated by the inherent qualities of both materials, Andrea makes simple yet considered forms that explore the behaviour of both bone china and glass, their shared properties of translucency and clarity, to create tactile and sensual pieces which can capture movement and a moment in time.
