Joy Wolfenden-Brown was born in1961, and read fine art at the University
of Leeds. She studied art therapy as a post-graduate at Hertfordshire
College of Art & Design and spent ten years working with children and
young people in the mental health field, before taking time out as the
mother of two boys. Since resuming painting again twelve years ago she has
had several sell-out solo exhibitions, as well as features in the
Guardian, the Observer and the regional press in Devon and Cornwall. She
won the Sherborne Open Prize in 2007 and was shortlisted for the 2009
Chichester painting prize. ‘Treasure’, is her third solo show at Beaux
Arts Bath.
Everyone has a different way or truth. No one sees or hears from the same
perspective. My painting is simply my own truth. The ego is a burden and
my studio allows me to shed boundaries and find my own small self. I
often feel that I know nothing but as I paint I catch sight of moments or
little glimpses of the elusive present and they can be plain or delicate
as a moth but at times they can feel like small epiphanies. The process of
painting can be like quietly listening and I have learnt that I will not
always hear an opera or a symphony but that the sound or sight of a
sparrow can alsopierce my soul with love, pain or joy and can be a tiny
opening into heaven..
