MARK ENTWISLE
New Works on Paper

Opening tomorrow, 4 September, our next show features a collection of works on paper by Mark Entwisle, winner of the 2020 Sunday Times Watercolour award.
Mark has appeared in several BP portrait prize exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, numerous times in the RA summer show, Threadneedle Award, and Lynn Painters & Stainers award exhibitions, among many others.
His work in watercolour is highly regarded. The wonderful actor and art-lover Una Stubbs once remarked that Mark’s watercolour paintings were amongst the things she would try to save if her house were on fire.
Playwright Tamsin Ogleby sums up Mark’s work wonderfully well; Mark looks long and hard and with great clarity at his subjects but manages somehow to suggest the immediacy of a glance. Scattered objects carry weight, not symbolic but emotional, so that what seems incidental becomes telling.

JO BARRETT
New Paintings

Also showing in September we have the luscious and minimal still life paintings of Jo Barrett. Jo is an alumni of Bath Spa University, so this show, her third with us, is something of a home-from-home-coming. Her works focus on capturing the form, light and atmosphere created by carefully selected objects and the space they inhabit. Her work evokes the palette and atmosphere of the 18th century Dutch still life tradition. She has distilled this influence into minimal and structured arrangements, where folds in the tablecloth and diffused forms in the background play an essential role in the final works.

JACK DOHERTY
New Ceramics

Our ceramicist for this show is the incredible Jack Doherty. If you would like to see additional images, short video footage via whatsapp, facetime or zoom – please let me know.

And finally, seasonally, on a lovely sunny day in Bath…..Sara Teasdale, September Midnight

Lyric night of the lingering Indian Summer,
Shadowy fields that are scentless but full of singing,
Never a bird, but the passionless chant of insects,
Ceaseless, insistent.

The grasshopper’s horn, and far-off, high in the maples,
The wheel of a locust leisurely grinding the silence
Under a moon waning and worn, broken,
Tired with summer.

Let me remember you, voices of little insects,
Weeds in the moonlight, fields that are tangled with asters,
Let me remember, soon will the winter be on us,
Snow-hushed and heavy.

Over my soul murmur your mute benediction,
While I gaze, O fields that rest after harvest,
As those who part look long in the eyes they lean to,
Lest they forget them.
