14. Cut and Altered Black Bowl with Chartreuse Interior, Ashraf Hanna Clay, 22 x 19 x 19 cm. £2,200

We are pleased to present an exhibition of the work of Ashraf Hanna, one of the U.K.’s leading ceramic artists. His work is hand-built, from a clay (Ashraf Hanna Clay) produced to his personal specification. The results are stunning – flowing, undulating forms that are smooth to the touch yet with a distinctive ‘grain’. There are vessels that have been sliced and altered, with light passing through and shimmering over the burnished surfaces. And then there is the range of size – tall, elegant, gently altered vases which unfurl like sails in the wind, are a contrast with the small ‘pinched’ and/or altered bowls. As with his eponymous clay, so with the finished vessel- he has developed his own look, his own contented forms. He explains thus:

‘Growing up in Egypt I was surrounded by pottery forms that have changed little since the ancient times, classical forms that have filtered through the ages, touched and formed by the hand of the potter. These forms were functional storage jars and water cooling urns. It was not however until I went to El Minia College of Fine Arts that I started to really look at them. Close observation during drawing classes of still life compositions opened my eyes to the beauty and contentment that exist within a well considered and executed form.’

In this country Ashraf’s work has been acquired by the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, the V & A, the National Museum of Wales, whilst overseas his ceramics grace leading collections in Oregon, Switzerland and Germany to name but a few.

5. Purple Vessel with Undulating Rim, Ashraf Hanna Clay, 43 x 20 x 20 cm. £2,800
30. Cut and Altered Grey Pinch Pot with Chartreuse Interior, Ashraf Hanna Clay, 12 x 13 x 13 cm. £550

The simple beauty of the small vessels is a joy to behold.

Small vessels: Ivory, Light Grey, Grey, Dark Grey, Charcoal Heights: 21, 20, 18, 16, 14 cm. respectively

The taller vessels with undulating rims are similarly distinctive but offer difference in scale:

Left to Right: 4. Grey Bulbous Vessel 43 x 28 x 27 cm., 6. Yellow Vessel with Undulating Rim 45 x 19 x 19 cm., 3. Slim Black Vessel 59 x 22 x 30cm., 5. Purple Vessel with Undulating Rim 43 x 20 x 20 cm.

And finally….

Spring flew swiftly by, and summer came; and if the village had been beautiful at first, it was now in the full glow and luxuriance of its richness. The great trees, which had looked shrunken and bare in the earlier months, had now burst into strong life and health; and stretching forth their green arms over the thirsty ground, converted open and naked spots into choice nooks, where was a deep and pleasant shade from which to look upon the wide prospect, steeped in sunshine, which lay stretched out beyond. The earth had donned her mantle of brightest green; and shed her richest perfumes abroad. It was the prime and vigour of the year; all things were glad and flourishing.
